First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this. I will try to keep it short, as I know you’re quite busy and you make it very clear that you don’t have time for anything other than all of the things that you make time for that keep you so busy so you don’t have time for anything else.
While I pride myself at being great at many things, Time Management is something I am exceptionally good at. I am never late, I am always on time and if I am not on time, I’m early. Even in my busiest of schedule periods, I manage to get everything accomplished while maintaining my calm.
I would like to offer the following guidance to you to help you find those hours in your days that you swear do not exist. In the beginning, this will take some time, so you’ll have to make time to do this exercise, ONCE.
Take a large sheet of paper or if you’re so savvy, make a spreadsheet in Excel. But since most of us aren’t so savvy (eh hem) let’s stick with the sheet of paper and a pen. Write out the day from start to finish from 12:00am to 11:59pm, in 30 minute blocks. It would look something like:
And continue to write out your day in half hour blocks. If you come to a time slot where you have a gap, write FREE TIME in that space and keep building your day. When you have finished that day, do the next day, and the next – until the following seven days are completed. If you come to tasks that you’re not sure how long they will take to do, guess and block out the allotted time.
When all of this has been done, go back to your lists with a highlighter and highlight all of the FREE TIME spaces. While they may appear sporadically in your schedule, being able to identify where they are is critical. Calculate the amount of FREE TIME you have per day and write that total at the top of each day. After you have done all eight days, see how many hours of FREE TIME you have during the week and where those hours of freedom are located.
Now that you see where you have FREE TIME, think of what you’ve been wanting to do that you keep telling everyone that you’re too busy to accomplish. Whether it’s fitting in a workout, going for a walk, reading a book, planning a vacation, etc. – you have now found the time to do it. Maintaining the mindset that you don’t have time for anything is nonsense because you most certainly do. If the exact block of time that you wish to have does not currently exist, look at your day and see where your FREE TIME is, and see if you can rearrange some things during your day to allow you larger amounts of FREE TIME in those areas.
If you legitimately find yourself booked for every minute of every day, you have to do some thinking. Is everything on your list so important that you can’t cut any of it, or can you make some edits and plug in some new, wonderful things you’ve not yet been able to include?
You deserve to live with a profound sense of freedom and decisiveness to do as you wish, when you wish. That is The Ultimate Life!
