Like so many of us, I found myself wishing for a huge bag of potato chips and popcorn to munch on while I was watching Fashion Star and The Voice tonight. At 8:00p, theTerrors of TV Time began and the onslaught of commercials was relentlessly slapping me across the face.
“Eat this!” “Chew that!” “Only $4.99!” “You deserve it!” “Take the Special K challenge!” Can’t I just go grab a big bowl of cereal and throw some chocolate chips in there? Heck, while I’m at it, how about a few gobs of peanut butter and a splash of jelly?
It isn’t hunger that makes us eat in front of the tv. It’s the power of suggestion that gets us every time. Think of the last time you were on a diet. Remember when your best friend or significant other said in a really excited, persuasive tone, “Let’s be really bad and split a pizza!?” You willingly and readily took them up on that offer and most likely, many since!
Try to distract yourself to get away from the issue. If the bombardment from your tv is relentless, get up and walk away. While you’re up, walking away, TURN IT OFF! Contrary to what they tell you, the major networks won’t lose money and your favorite shows won’t end up “on the bubble” if you walk away every now and then and actually POWER DOWN your set.
At the end of the day, you are looking out for YOU. While you rest in bed, all sprawled out, would you rather prepare yourself to dream the incredible or would you rather pontificate further about how you shouldn’t have had that 20th cookie?
The choice is ALWAYS….YOURS!
